The Fight between Yoshitsune and Benkei
This ukiyo-e print is composed of three oban-format sheets, the standard size for many ukiyo-e works. The boy leaping across the railing on the left is Minamotono Yoshitsune (1159–1189), the younger brother of Minamotono Yoritomo (1147–1199), the founder of the Kamakura shogunate. On the right, holding a long spear, stands Musashibo Benkei (d. 1189). This print illustrates the famous legend in which Benkei, encountering Yoshitsune by chance, attempts to seize his sword, leading to a dramatic duel between the two. Here, the story is reimagined with a mythical twist: Yoshitsune is depicted in the company of eight mountain deities, subduing the powerful Benkei.
