Dish with peonies and wave design

This is one of a set of five nanasun-sara dishes, which were produced in the Nabeshima court kilns during the heyday of Imari ware. Nanasun-sara (七寸明) refers to dishes with a standardized size of seven sun (approx. twenty-one centimeters) in diameter that were mass-produced in the official kilns to be presented as tribute to the Tokugawa shogunate. Half of the dish was painted with blue underglaze wave designs and then further adorned with peony designs arranged on either side of the blue wave area using enamel overglaze. It has a relatively high foot and features designs of the seven treasures in three places around the exterior, which is a characteristic of Nabeshima polychrome dishes.
