Dish with chrysanthemum and wave designs

This is one of a set of five gosun-sara dishes, which were produced in the official Nabeshima kilns during the heyday of Imari ware. Gosun-sara (五寸皿) refers to dishes with a standardized size of five sun (approx. fifteen centimeters) in diameter that were mass-produced in the official kilns to be presented as tribute to the Tokugawa shogunate. The interior of this example features a patterned design of gentle waves rendered in cobalt-blue underglaze that has been further adorned with overglazed chrysanthemum and leaf motifs.
