Bottle with birds and flowers design
Kakiemon-style porcelain, which is a type of Imari ware produced for export, was named after Sakaida Kakiemon (1596–1666), a potter active in Arita who developed a special technique for coloring porcelain. Kakiemon ware is characterized by exquisite designs in mainly red hues rendered on a creamy white ground. These rectangular bottles are typical examples of Kakiemon porcelain produced in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its rectangular forms and design motifs such as pine trees, rocks, and birds painted on each side had a significant influence on eighteenth century European porcelain.
