Mirror case with peony, arabesque, and Tokugawa family crest design
This box is used to store an ekagami, a mirror with a handle. The mirror first appeared in the late Muromachi period and was greatly influenced in shape and usage by the handled mirrors of the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties. The initial design of the mirror was small with a diameter of about 10 centimeters, but in the Edo period, larger mirrors began to be manufactured, and by the end of the 17th century, large mirrors with a diameter of around 24 centimeters appeared. As the mirror became larger, the designs that decorated the back of the mirror also became more diverse. Decorations for the mirrors consisted of auspicious designs including pine, bamboo, and plum, turtles and cranes; famous places such as Mt. Fuji; and family crests.
