A Scholar Returning to the Retreat in the Ping Forest

The painting depicts a scholar approaching a secluded retreat nestled within a grove of pine trees. In the inscription at the upper left of the painting, Qian Du, an artist of the Qing dynasty, states that in march 1821, he created this work by copying a painting by Tang Yin, which itself was a reproduction of Returning to Seclusion in the Pine Valley by Li Tang. With dry brushwork outlining the forms and soft washes of diluted ink enhancing the atmosphere, this piece exemplifies Qian Du’s refined landscape technique.
