Flowers and Insects

The late Joseon literati painter Sim Sajeong was renowned for his depictions of flowers and insects. The blossoms, rendered with swift, expressive strokes, and the soft green leaves, painted in the boneless technique, exemplify his distinctive, uninhibited style. Despite the small scale, both paintings achieve a harmonious balance of fresh colors and a stable composition. Sim refined his unique artistic style by studying botanical and insect illustrations from Chinese painting manuals such as Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting and Master Gu’s Painting Manual.
