Daoist Immortals
Paintings of Daoist immortals were widely created in response to people’s wishes for longevity and blessings in this life. In these works, Kim Hongdo portrayed immortals—traditionally regarded as mystical beings—in diverse poses and gestures, with dramatic facial expressions that make them appear more approachable. The right painting features Qingwuzi (靑烏子) accompanied by a deer, Zhongli Quan (鍾離權) exposing his belly while holding a plantain-leaf fan, and the young immortal Han Xiangzi (韓湘子) playing the flute. The left painting vividly depicts Wenchang (文昌) writing on a long, fluttering scroll, while the surrounding immortals react in astonishment as a squirrel leaps onto the paper
