Landscape in Gold

This painting presents a landscape in gold paint on black silk. The enlarged cliff with grand pine trees in the foreground and scattered mountains in layers in the distance provide a deep sense of space. The artist’s outstanding skill can be observed in the curvilinear cliff and trees, mountain peaks rendered in varying gold tones, and clouds depicted using a wet-on-wet painting technique in which light but saturated pigment is applied to a wet surface. Around the seventeenth century, the use of gold paint in paintings and calligraphy was popular among the Joseon royal family. Since Buddhas or dragon designs in gold symbolized noble sanctity and sovereign power, gold-painted landscapes might have represented an everlasting utopia.
