This Uigwe documents the manufacturing process of King Sukjong’s royal dragon robes, palanquins, and various regalia. King Sukjong, despite being crowned in 1674, spent 27 months in mourning garments because his predecessor King Hyeonjong funeral lasted for 27 months. The new monarch’s symbolic items could not be produced until after the funeral.
To produce the items, in the second year of the new reign, a division (byeolsambang) was established. The division was in operation only during the four reigns of King Hyeonjong, King Sukjong, King Gyeongjong, and King Yeongjo. This is the unique copy of the Uigwe that details its establishment and tasks during King King Sukjong’s reign. According to the Uigwe, all budgets and materials were decided referring to the Uigwe of the division produced under King Hyeonjong’s reign, which suggests that the division established under King Sukjong’s reign was operated following the precedent of the division established in 1661(2nd year of King Hyeonjong).
