This Uigwe book for royal perusal retains its original form. The green silk book cover features patterns of clouds and treasured items. The book’s binding was reinforced with brass rivets and chrysanthemum-shaped ornaments, and the title, written on a separate piece of white silk, was attached to the cover, landing the book a sense of splendor.
In 1674, Queen Inseon (1618-1674), King Hyojong’s consort, passed away and this Uigwe documents the funeral procedures for the late queen. In this state funeral, which involved the procession carrying the body to the tomb site(barin), the body was transported by waterway, which was unprecedented. The waterway of Namhangang River was the route used for the procession carrying the queen’s body to Nyeongneung Royal Tomb, Yeoju. The preparations and procedures for the procession are detailed in this Uigwe.
