Gilt Bronze Buddha With Inscription: “Seventh Year of Yeonga”

This is the oldest Buddhist statue found in Korea to date. The inscriptions on the back of the halo (7th year of Yeonga, Gimi year) and stylistic features suggest that the statue was made in Goguryeo around 539. The slender face, the thick robes that do not allow the curves of the body to be revealed, and the way the robe hem extends outwards like fish fins are also typical features of Buddhist statues from Northern Wei (386-534). These characteristics therefore suggest that this statue was influenced by Northern Wei.
