Twin Bird-type Pommel-end Fitting
Pommel-end fittings made of stone or metal served the dual purpose of decorating the ends of hilts and adding weight to the end of the dagger to provide balance. Twin bird-type pommel-end fittings, also known as the “antennae-type,” first appeared in the Jilin region of China. Examples in which the birds’ heads and beaks are fluidly expressed have only been found in Korea’s northwestern region, around the Bukhan River and in the central Yeongnam region (centered around Daegu and Gyeongsan). Simplified versions that resemble antennae have been found throughout the Yeongnam region and in parts of the Japanese Archipelago.
