Bronze Seal of Ye Chieftain
This bronze seal was given to the head of the Ye polity by China’s Jin Dynasty. The square-shaped bottom section measures 2.3 centimeters across and features six characters in three rows with two characters each: 晉率善濊伯長. “晉” refers to the Chinese state of Jin, which bestowed the bronze seal; “率善” is the title given to a vassal state; “濊” is the name of the group to which the seal’s owner belonged; and “伯長” refers to the chief. The heads of the Samhan and Ye societies solidified their political foundations by possessing such precious objects, acquired through contact with the outside world.
