Pouch-shaped Pottery
The texture of this pottery is similar to that of roof tiles; hence the name (the character “瓦”, meaning roof tile, is read as “wa” in Korean). It was made of fine clay and fired in a closed kiln, resulting in a gray or grayish-black surface color. Representative vessel shapes include pouch-shaped jars and jars with horn-shaped handles. Over time, pottery shapes became more diverse, with pedestals added to many vessels and new vessel types appearing, such as brazier-shaped stands.
