What is the earliest bronze artifact found on the Korean Peninsula? It is a small bronze hand knife from the site of Shinam-ri in Yongcheon-gun, Pyonganbukdo Province, located at the mouth of the Amnok River. The knife was found in the second cultural layer of Area 3 at the Shinam-ri site, along with a bronze button, stone axe, semi-lunar stone knife, and plain pottery. Based on comparisons with the neighboring bronze cultures of Northeast China and elsewhere, this artifact can be dated to before the 13th century BCE. In the southern and central regions of the Korean Peninsula, bronze ornament pieces from a dwelling at the site of Auraji in Jeongseon are the oldest dated finds. Based on its accompanying objects and carbon dating, they are estimated to date from the 13th century to the 11th century BCE.
