Red Burnished Pottery

Unlike the crude plain vessels that served everyday purposes, fine clay was used to shape red burnished vessels. Red pigment mixed with water was applied onto the surface of the carefully dried vessels, and the surface was then rubbed with a smooth tool before being fired. When the main ingredient in the red pigment, ferric oxide, is fired at a low temperature in an open kiln, it comes into contact with large amounts of oxygen, which enhances the reddish color.
