“Pressure Flaking,” a Stone Production Technology of the Later Period

“Pressure flaking” was a method of removing stone flakes by using a tool made of hard stone or an animal horn to apply pressure against the edge of the stone material. Typically, pressure flaking was used to add finishing touches to stone tools chipped into the desired shape. This enabled humans to make more sophisticated stone tools. Tanged points and microblades, which appeared in the Later Paleolithic, were the representative tools of the period made with pressure flaking.
