This Uigwe documents the relocation of Yeonguwon, the tomb of Crown Prince Sado (莊獻世子, 1735-1762), in 1789. The tomb was moved from Yangju to Suwon. Crown Prince Sado, the second son of King Yeongjo (英祖, r. 1724-1776) and the father of King Jeongjo (正祖, r. 1776-1800), was installed as crown prince one year after his birth. In 1749, by his father’s order, Crown Prince Sado became the ruling regent of Joseon. This change, in conjunction with the ongoing conflict between the political factions of Noron and Soron, led to greater animosity between father and son. In 1762, Crown Prince Sado died by his father’s order. Upon ascending to the throne, King Jeongjo sought to restore his father’s status. Thus, the king declared that the tomb of Crown Prince Sado should be relocated to a more auspicious site. This Uigwe includes an illustration of the royal procession in which the coffin and grave goods were transported from the old tomb to the new one. Given the political circumstances of Crown Prince Sado’s death, the royal procession for his funeral bier had been rather meager. In order to redress this, King Jeongjo ordered that the procession for relocating his tomb should match the status of a procession for a king. As a result, the procession was led by high-ranking officials from Yejo (Ministry of Rites), Hojo (Ministry of Taxation), the municipal government of Hanseong (present-day Seoul), and other esteemed institutions. Furthermore, King Jeongjo assigned 700 soldiers to serve as royal guards in the front and back of the procession. The depiction of those soldiers in the illustration of the royal procession would serve as the model for depicting the royal guard in illustrations produced under King Yeongjo (英祖, r. 1724-1776). This Uigwe is a fascinating resource for examining the process of relocating a royal tomb of the Joseon Dynasty.
