This Uigwe documents the funerary process in 1688 for Queen Jangryeol (莊烈王后, 1624-1688), the second queen of King Injo (仁祖, r. 1623-1649). All of the tasks related to the queen’s funeral were conducted by the Dogam office, a temporary institution that was established immediately after the queen’s death and was then disbanded after her spirit tablet was enshrined in the Spirit Hall. Notably, in the illustration, both sides of the palanquins carrying the coffin and the case for the spirit tablet are covered by blue curtains, preventing people from seeing inside. In contrast, during a procession for a king’s funeral, these palanquins were typically exposed for public viewing. As shown by the illustration, the procession for Queen Jangryeol’s funeral was particularly long, since it included palanquins to carry jade investiture books and royal seals for all four of the honorary titles that she had received during her lifetime. The extended procession is fitting for Queen Jangryeol, who became King Injo’s second queen when she was fourteen years old, and then served many important roles, including Queen Dowager, during the reigns of King Hyojong (孝宗, r. 1649-1659), King Hyeonjong (顯宗, r. 1659-1674), and King Sukjong (肅宗, r. 1674-1720).
