국립중앙박물관은 올해 세 번째 기획특별전으로 <불꽃 속에 피어나는 숭고한 정신, 불사리와 장엄>을 마련하였습니다. 여 기서 ‘불꽃’이라 함은 불교를 열은 석가모니의 시신을 인도의 장례법葬禮法에 따라 태우는 모습을 비유한 것입니다. 일반인의 시신을 화장하면, 뒤에 남는 것이라고는 한 줌의 재에 불과하지만, 석가모니의 시신에서는 불사리佛舍利라는 것이 나왔습니다. 불사리는 석가모니라는 위대한 성인이 인류에게 남겨준 유산으로, 간단히 정의할 수 없는 '숭고한 정신'을 상징한다고 볼 수 있습니다. 이 번 전시는 석가탄신일을 맞이하여 일반인들이 쉽게 접할 수 없는 불사리와 그와 관련된 사리갖춤을 공개합니다. 특히 그동안 문헌기록으로만 알려져 왔던 황룡사의 진신사리眞身舍利를 직접 볼 수 있는 기회도 마련하였습니다. 이번 전시를 통해 석가모니라는 성인의 숭고한 정신과 그것을 이해하고 예술품으로 승화시킨 우리 선조들의 예술정신을 우리가 조금이라도 이해하는 계기가 되었으면 좋겠습니다.

 
The National Museum of Korea presents Lofty Spirit Arising from Flames Sarira, Reliquaries as the third special exhibition of the year. The word flame is an analogy of the scene of cremating the body of Buddha Shakyamuni. Although ordinary people leave only a handful of ashes after their bodies are cremated, Shakyamuni's body left behind extraordinary substances called sarira. Sarira is an invaluable message transmitted directly from the great saint of Buddhism to us. Their are no other words than lofty spirit to express its symbolic meaning. In celebration of Buddha's Birthday, this exhibition introduces sarira and related objects that were not easily accessible to the public. Especially, the Buddha's sarira of from Hwangnyongsa Site, which have only been known through documents, are exhibited for the first time. I hope that this exhibition gives us a chance to take a glimpse of the lofty spirit of Shakyamuni and the religious sincerity and artistic maturity of our ancestors who created the exquisite buddhist works.
