Star-shaped Stone Mace Head

Star-shaped stone mace heads, sometimes referred to as “sawtooth” or “multi-headed” mace heads, have a characteristic shape consisting of a central hole surrounded by a radial series of points. A shaft would likely have been inserted into the central hole, allowing the mace to be used as a weapon, but these objects may also have served as symbols of the authority of the ruling elite. The points come in a variety of shapes, resembling a star, the spokes of a wheel, or the slats of a folding fan.
