Between 1894 and 1897, Isabella Bird Bishop visited the Joseon Dynasty four times, and she documented her observations about the country in Korea and Her Neighbours. Bishop provides vivid descriptions of the Korean people, detailing their way of life and customs through accounts of her own experiences, as well as her research on other sources. She freely describes some negative aspects of the country, including corrupt officials, poverty, and oppression against women, but also lavishly praises the beautiful natural landscape.
