Celadon Bowl with Inlaid Chrysanthemum Scroll Design

This large celadon bowl was reportedly excavated from the tomb of Mun Gongyu, a Goryeo official who died in 1159, during the reign of King Uijong. Since its production date can be approximated, this bowl is not only a splendid work of art, but also an invaluable artifact for the study of the development of the inlay technique. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with a chrysanthemum motif, inlaid with black and white clay, while the interior bears a resplendent scroll design. Based on the beauty and complexity of the designs, artisans had become relatively proficient with the inlay technique by the time that the bowl was produced. According to records, bowls of this type were used to drink tea during the Goryeo period, and to drink tea, wine, or soup during the Joseon period.
