Celadon Maebyeong with Inlaid Plum, Bamboo, and Crane Design

This maebyeong combines a majestic, billowing form with an impeccable inlaid design of cranes playing around plum trees and bamboo. The scene recalls the story of Lin Bu, a poet of China’s Northern Song Dynasty, who famously claimed that plum trees were like his wife, and cranes like his children. Tales from ancient China were a popular theme for designs on inlaid celadon vessels.
