Heavenly Musician

In Buddhism, the heavenly beings known as “apsaras” are commonly depicted as flying musicians, floating on clouds and playing a flute. These “Heavenly Musicians” are thought to express the truth of Buddhism through music. Although the instrument is missing from this sculpture, the placement of the hands shows that the figure once held a flute. Also, in a very realistic expression, the mouth is slightly pursed, as if blowing.
