Mastiff

Dogs were a popular subject in Mesopotamian art. This clay mastiff is hollow on the inside and retains some of its original polychromy. Its musculature, the folds in its face, and the braided collar encircling its neck are carefully rendered, as Kassites were renowned artists of clay. The hole at the top of its head might have once held a standard.
