Statue of Gudea
Diorite sculpture of the Gudea, ensi of the city-state of Lagash. Gudea is executed in simple, supple lines and his clasped hands and large eyes signal attentive piety. He commissioned this sculpture – and many others – to commemorate his refurbishment of the temples of Lagash, which the Sumerian inscription on his skirt records. Gudea’s sculptures were also installed in the temples of Lagash.
