Painting of Fuxi and Nüwa

This painting shows Fuxi and Nüwa from the Chinese myth of the creation of heaven and earth. The two deities in the middle have the upper half of a human and the lower half of a snake. The one on the left is Nüwa, and the right one is Fuxi. They hold a compass and a bent ruler, respectively. These tools are related to the cosmological view of a round heaven and a square earth. In the background are the sun, moon, and constellations, including the Big Dipper, all of which depict a microcosm. This painting is based on a Chinese theme, but the shading in the faces and hands and the representation of the sun and moon demonstrate Central Asian conventions.
