Figurines of Civil Official

This clay doll is said to have been excavated from the Astana Tombs of the Turpan region. Dolls like this were produced as grave goods, and they are most often found in the tombs of high-ranking officials. Also, the doll's hat and round-collared robe resemble the formal dress of civil officials of the Tang Dynasty. Thus, the details of the doll provide useful insights about the date of the tomb and the status of the deceased. The doll is rather long and it has an extended rod at the bottom, where it was likely inserted into a hole in a wall support or in the floor of the tomb chamber.
