Gilt-bronze Buddha
This statue conveys the dynamic vivacity of gilt-bronze Buddhist images from the early Unified Silla period. The facial features are not yet standardized, and the robe covers both shoulders, with a series of U-shaped creases cascading down the body. The voluptuousness of the body and the natural creases of the robe along the contour convey a strong sense of dimension and solidity. Atop the head is a tall round ushnisha, a protrusion of flesh that represents Buddha’s enlightenment.
