This Buddhist sutra and portable holder were used by Choe Chung-heon (1149-1219), a military ruler of the mid-Goryeo Period, and his sons Choe U (?-1249) and Choe Hyang (?-1230). The holder is attached with a string for convenient portability, and its surface is plated with gold over silver.
The sutra is a woodblock print specially published for the Choe Family. Three volumes of this sutra are contained on folded sheets of paper measuring 275 cm in length when unfolded. A letter of invocation is included at the end of the sutra, praying for longevity and good fortune. It is a kind of personal amulet that shows the religious mentality of that time.
