A “rank badge” refers to an embroidered patch that was attached to the front and back of the clothes of members of the royal family and government officials of the Joseon Dynasty. This patch was attached to the robes of Heungseon Daewongun, the biological father of King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty. As he held very high status, his robe was fully embroidered in gold, with a design of an imaginary creature called a girin leaping forward, and wave designs beneath the girin in the middle. The background of this badge is densely embroidered with cloud designs to give it a splendid appearance.
