This eight-panel folding screen is mounted with paintings depicting a royal banquet held in 1848 (the 14th year of King Heonjong’s reign) to celebrate the 60th birthday of Queen Sunwon, the king’s grandmother, and the 41st birthday of Queen Sinjeong, the king’s mother. Paintings of royal banquets such as this were produced for the purpose of political stabilization, by highlighting the proper way to govern people and promoting the Confucian virtues of filial piety and respect for the elderly. The portrayal of various people gathered together at a royal event makes it a very important court genre painting.
