Yi Insang was a scholar and painter who was exceptionally talented in all three areas of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Although he belonged to a prominent scholar official family, his great grandfather was a son of a concubine who experienced certain social discrimination. This painting reveals that effort was made to render the features of the model as naturally as possible. For example, the area around the eyes was lightly painted with a red tint to express the surrounding muscles as well as a frown in his brow, dark age spots below the ears expressed with light dots and the realistic depiction of each strand of hair as well as the eyebrows and beard with fine brushstrokes.
