In Korea, stone lanterns were built at Buddhist temples and burial sites by both Buddhists and Confucians to symbolize the effort to find the Truth or to ensure peace for the spirits of the dead. This particular stone lantern is characterized by a central pillar in the shape of two lions upholding the light chamber and the roof.
