This sarira reliquary was found at the West Pagoda of Gameunsa Temple, which is known to have been built to pray for the repose of the spirit of King Munmu, who accomplished a historic achievement by unifying the three ancient Korean kingdoms. The reliquary is a fine example of the “pavilion style,” comprising a base with railings and four columns, one at each corner, supporting a heavily embellished canopy. The base is decorated with lotus and elephant eye designs, while the sarira bottle was kept under a lid in the shape of an overturned bowl.
