This folding screen contains scenes from Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), the great literary work of the Heian Period of Japan. It follows in the tradition of Tosa Mitsuoki (1539-1613) in terms of its painting style, and is presumed to have been made in the 17th century, i.e., the Edo Period. The women are dressed in the typical attire of the Edo Period, rather than that of the Heian Period, indicating the social background of the period in which the screen was made.
