This is a kind of reading desk used in a Korean traditional house. Originally, such desks were used by Buddhist monks when reading Buddhist scriptures at a temple, but they were adopted for use in the men’s quarters of private residences in the 16th century. The raised end at each side is designed to prevent scrolls from rolling off the end of the desk.
