Heo Ryeon (1808-1893), a literati painter of the late Joseon period, produced a number of paintings of peonies, earning him the nickname Heo Moran (meaning “peony”). Sochi Mungmyo, or Album Containing Paintings of Peonies, is comprised of eight ink paintings of peonies. The shapes of the areas showing the peonies change with each painting. The artist varied the concentrations of ink while using the splashed ink effect to create lively forms, producing one of the masterpieces of his peony paintings.
