Hairpins made of gold, silver or jade were usually worn by members of the upper class, while versions made of wood, horn, and bone were used by the common people. This hairpin is mainly silver, with only the phoenix ornament gold-plated. The phoenix has a large comb and long feathers. This hairpin is so elaborately detailed that even the texture of the feathers is incised in fine lines.
