This short calligraphic text was written by Song Si-yeol (pen-name: Uam, 1607-1689) who was known for his energetic style of handwriting. The eight Chinese characters, which mean “Both the sky and the land of the Eastern State (i.e. Joseon) harbor a great resolve to look up to the spirit of the Zhou Dynasty,” display the neo-Confucian scholar’s Sino-centric attitude. The lively brush strokes leave onlookers feeling refreshed.
