The writing on the right side of this painting indicates that it is a portrait of Yi Gwang-sa (1705-1777) painted when he was 70 years old by Shin Han-pyeong, a government artist of the late Joseon period. The dark red facial tone, the spot on the left eyebrow, and the age spots on the nose and cheeks signal the artist’s intention to paint the portrait realistically. The wrinkles of the robe and his grim expression seem to be associated with his long life in exile.
