Nam Gu-man (1629-1711) served as the Prime Minister under King Sukjong (r. 1674-1720) of Joseon. He was known for his uprightness, integrity, and political caliber. The portrait portrays him in his official robes when he was in his 80s. Line drawings are minimized. The features of the face are portrayed with a delicate contrast of colors. This painting marked the emergence of a new portrait style and technique in the country in the 18th century. At present, four portraits of Nam Gu-man are known to still exist and all of them display similar appearances and painting styles.
