This is a Buddhist painting of the eighth of the ten kings of hell. On the one-hundredth day after a person’s death, the soul of the deceased comes before the eighth king, who is said to reign over the eight hot hells and eight cold hells where the bodies of sinners are cut into pieces with a saw. The painting portrays sinners bound in a punishment device and being plunged into boiling water.
