This is a calligraphic work by Kang Se-hwang (pen-name: Pyoam), an accomplished poet, calligrapher, and painter of the late Joseon period. The Chinese characters written in semi-cursive script on a light-pink background are the words of the poem One Spring Day by the prominent mid-Joseon literary figure Choe Jeon (1567-1588). This beautiful presentation harmonizes with the poem, visually depicting the spring scenery through sharp yet variable strokes while maximizing the effects of dark brush strokes and dry-brush painting technique. Kang’s handwriting shares similarities with that of Mi Fu.
