The National Museum of Korea is pleased to present the special exhibition Through the Eyes of Joseon Painters: Real Scenery Landscapes of Korea featuring real-view landscape painting (實景山水畵, silgyeong sansuhwa) from the Joseon Dynasty. Real scenery landscape paintings depict actual mountains and streams from the physical surroundings. The tradition of real scenery landscape painting began in the Goryeo Dynasty and was enriched during the Joseon era. As sightseeing tours of scenic spots became popular among the literati, Korean people grew increasingly aware of the value and beauty of the Korean landscape.

This special exhibition focuses on the perspectives of the painters who portrayed actual views of the Korean landscape. It is thrilling to observe how the scenes studied and experienced by painters were visualized. The beauty of the Korean landscapes witnessed by Joseon painters and illustrated in their distinctive manners continues to make a profound impression on viewers today. This exhibition will offer viewers an opportunity to regard Korean landscapes from their own perspectives and listen to the stories of Joseon painters embedded within their real-view landscape paintings.
