The National Museum of Korea is proud to present the special exhibition Treasures from Afghanistan in collaboration with the National Museum of Afghanistan. Providing a comprehensive overview of the ancient history and culture of Afghanistan, the exhibition presents 231 objects from the National Museum of Afghanistan. The featured items include multicultural heritages drawn from the archaeological sites, ranging from Bronze Age sites around 2,000 BCE to urban sites from the first through third century CE. Located at the northeastern tip of the Iranian Plateau, Afghanistan is a landlocked country surrounded by Tadjikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Pakistan. Located at the geographic center of the Eurasian continent, this region long served as a crossroads for different civilizations. It occupied a key position along the Silk Road, connecting Europe of the west, China of the east, and India of the south. The ancient culture of Afghanistan represents a mix between the indigenous culture and numerous foreign influences that steadily passed through the region for centuries. As such, archaeological research in this area has yielded valuable clues about the ancient culture of many different regions. This exhibition examines that cultural heritage chronologically, with an emphasis on four archaeological sites: Tepe Fullol, Ai Khanum, Tillya Tepe, and Begram. Amidst the recent violence and turbulence in Afghanistan, these treasures have been zealously protected in recognition of their significance to our understanding of human history and their status as priceless cultural heritage transcending time and space. This exhibition offers visitors an extraordinary chance to take a firsthand look at this driving force in human history and culture.
