In celebration of 2022, the Year of the Black Tiger, the National Museum of Korea is presenting tigers in paintings. Nowadays we only see tigers at the zoo, but during the Joseon Dynasty they appeared all across the nation, and even in the royal palace where the king resided. With their large bodies, menacing faces, and sharp teeth and claws, Koreans of the past regarded tigers as fascinating beings with the valor and power required to drive away evil spirits. When the new year arrived, every household posted tiger paintings on its door. You are invited to enjoy these diverse depictions of tigers and explore the thoughts and wishes of the people of the past expressed in tiger paintings.
