The National Museum of Korea will be holding its eighteenth gwaebul exhibition, entitled Buddha’s Garden : Large Hanging Scroll from Janggoksa Temple
gwaebul is a large-scale Buddhist hanging scroll that is hung in a temple yard during rituals and on Buddha’s Birthday. They are seen only rarely at normal times.
Designated a national treasure, the Buddhist Hanging Scroll at Janggoksa Temple was produced to be hung during the Great Vulture Peak Assembly held in the yard of Daeungjeon Hall at Janggoksa Temple. The Great Vulture Peak Assembly transforms an everyday space into the site where the Buddha preached a key series of sermons. Anywhere that the Buddhist Hanging Scroll of Janggoksa Temple is hung becomes a pure land in which the Buddha preaches.
We cordially invite you to this garden of the Buddha as it unfolds in the museum.
